Public Records Launches ‘Public Funds’ to Support Black and Indigenous Music Professionals and Businesses in Canada

July 9th, 2020 (Tor, ON) - Today, homegrown label Public Records introduces “Public Funds” an initiative set forth in response to the heightened awareness of the lack of Black and Indigenous representation in music businesses and music professionals in the Canadian music landscape. “Public Funds” was created as a small professional development grant setup to support individuals from these communities and increase accessibility.

Individuals can apply for funding in order to help learn information, grow their skill sets or develop their professional networks by covering the cost of attending conferences, summits, music industry associations, festivals and other learning and professional development opportunities outside of these spaces. Given our current climate our initial focus will be on digital courses and virtual sessions with paid consultants and industry professionals. Grants will be awarded on a quarterly basis and reviewed by a jury of peers from Black and Indigenous communities. This fund will be trusteed by charitable organization The Remix Project & is powered by contributions from Music Managers Forum Canada, Awesome Music Inc., Public Records Inc. and Six Shooter Records Inc., and from the public at large.

"Equality for Black and Indigenous people in the Canadian Music industry only becomes possible with an increase of opportunity. The bridge to possibility is our responsibility - we have the responsibility to provide as many options for future generations, through sharing networks, skills and practices that are the foundation of a successful business." - Jermayne Clayton- President, Management  Awesome Music Inc.

“We loved how this program is about skill and networking development. We recognize that access to mentorship and to capital are key components to success. Black and Indigenous music professionals are extremely underrepresented (and under funded). This needs to change. We have huge respect for The Remix Project and look forward to seeing the results over the coming years.“ - Helen Britton, President and CEO, Management - Six Shooter Records Inc.

The Music Managers Forum is happy to be able to contribute to this new program “Public Funds” and support our great colleagues at The Remix Project behind it. We look forward to engaging the community to increase access, education and build relationships to create better opportunities for Black and Indigenous people in the music industry.” - Meg Symsyk, eOne Artist Management & MMF Canada President
